Insecurity and the difficulty to access primary education are significant barriers to achieving the UN’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These challenges are further complicated by the changing nature of conflicts and recurring cycles of violence. Peace-building has emerged as a central strategy to address conflict stricken communities and accelerate progress towards achieving the MDGs.
The Peace-Building, Education and Advocacy (PBEA) program aims to strengthen policies and practices, particularly to emphasise the empowerment of adolescents through education and to ensure education and learning opportunities are available to all Liberian children. Through ECD, ALP and ABE programs, as well as advocacy through local media and community events (such as quizzes, debates and football games), it is hoped that increasing access to quality and relevant conflict-sensitive education, will increase the capacity of children, parents, teachers and communities to promote peace while preventing, reducing and coping with conflict.
